Our Mission

Our mission is to empower youth of color through literacy, arts education, and mentorship, nurturing their personal identity, well-being, and equitable access to educational opportunities.

Our Vision

LitiArts envisions a world where students of color thrive in education systems that honor their identities, nurture their well-being, and empower them to shape a just and creative future through the transformative power of literacy, arts, and mentorship.

A Message from Dr. Lakeya Afolalu

A Word from Our Founder

Growing up, books and the arts were my escape, my teachers, and my connection to a world beyond my own. I didn’t always have the words to express myself, but I found them in stories, in dance, and in the encouragement of mentors who saw potential in me when I doubted myself.

As I moved through school and into teaching, I saw the same struggles in my students—the need to be seen, to be heard, to have spaces where their creativity and identity were not just tolerated but celebrated. Too many young people, especially students of color, are asked to leave parts of themselves behind in order to succeed academically. I wanted to change that.

LitiArts was born from a simple but powerful belief: literacy and the arts are not separate, and education should reflect the full humanity of every student. Through our Literacy-Arts Workshops, we integrate creative expression into learning, making education more engaging and meaningful. Our College & Career Preparation Fellowship supports first-generation students as they take their next big steps, ensuring they don’t have to navigate the journey alone.

The impact has been real: students gaining confidence, finding their voices, getting into colleges that once felt out of reach, and securing scholarships that make their dreams possible. But we are just getting started.

My vision for LitiArts is a future where every child—no matter their background—has access to an education that nurtures their whole self. A future where they can embrace who they are while striving for who they want to become.

This work is personal to me, and I invite you to be a part of it. Whether as a mentor, a supporter, or an advocate, your involvement can help shape a future where young people don’t have to choose between success and self-expression.

Let’s build it together.

What We Value

Youth & Community Voice

We actively listen to, honor, and prioritize the voices of students and community members. By integrating their knowledge and perspectives into all aspects of our programming and partnerships, we ensure that our initiatives are truly reflective of their needs and aspirations.

Mutually Reciprocal Relationships

We are dedicated to building relationships based on mutual respect and reciprocity. These relationships empower us to collaboratively navigate challenges and make informed decisions alongside the youth and communities we serve.

Identity

We recognize, affirm, and honor the diverse identities of students within their educational experiences. Our programs and mentorship initiatives are designed to celebrate and sustain these identities, fostering an inclusive environment that nurtures personal growth and self-acceptance.

Equity & Access

We are committed to breaking down systemic barriers that hinder opportunities for marginalized youth. By advocating for equitable access to resources, education, and creative expression, we ensure that every young person, regardless of background, has the tools and support to thrive.

Creative Expression & Empowerment

We believe in the transformative power of literacy and the arts as tools for self-expression, healing, and advocacy. By fostering creativity, we equip youth with the confidence to share their stories, challenge injustices, and shape the world around them.
